matapouri bay house

Designed as a ‘bach’ for a family with teenage kids, there was an opportunity to create a generational holiday home, with spaces both communal and private, for all family members.

What exists now is a timeless and subtly rustic coastal retreat, that takes inspiration from its natural surroundings, using materials that will patina and age gracefully.

A material palette of concrete, Meranti ply and glass was enhanced, by drawing on the native bush and coastal aspects of the site and utilising an environmentally sympathetic palette of natural materials, textures, subtle colour and pattern, to tailor each space.

Additionally, we needed to consider how the spaces will be used over time, as a result, we have selected materials that work well at all scales, are hard wearing, and have a subtle sophistication.

When selecting furniture, we choose product on the basis of size, comfort, durability, flexibility and materiality to suit the base palette and needs of a growing family.

The lighting design for this project was by StudioStudio, we also collaborated with GEL Architects and Hayes Builders to bring the project to life.
